Moroni's Fortifications

Moroni’s Fortifications are defensive works Moroni caused the Nephites to build around their cities and lands. He erected “small forts, or places of resort,” with “banks of earth” and walls of stone enclosing his armies (Alma 48:8). Moroni placed a greater number of men in the Nephites’ weakest fortifications (Alma 48:9).

In the twentieth year of the judges, Moroni’s armies began digging “heaps of earth round about all the cities” in Nephite-held lands (Alma 50:1). Moroni ordered timbers built atop the earthen ridges, “a frame of pickets” upon the timbers, and towers with protected places from which defenders could cast stones (Alma 50:2-4). He prepared strongholds “round about every city in all the land” (Alma 50:6).

Moroni also placed armies on the southern borders and caused them to erect fortifications to secure the armies and people from enemies (Alma 50:10). Lamanite forces later obtained cities “strongly fortified after the manner of the fortifications of Moroni” (Alma 51:27).
